IBM's Sequoia is 20x faster than the world's fastest supercomputer

The US Government has just put in an order for a new supercomputer from IBM, dubbed the Sequoia. What makes the Sequoia so special? Well, for starters it's about 20 times faster than the world's current fastest supercomputer. Yeah, it's pretty damned fast.

It's a 20 petaflop computer, and it's due in 2012. It'll use a total of 1.6 million cores assisted by 1.6 petabytes of memory to run calculations, most of which will simulate nuclear explosions. Also, I'm pretty sure it can run Crysis. Awesome.

CoreConfigurator - Graphic Management Tool for Windows Server 2008 Core

The default management for Windows Server 2008 Core is the command line. Yes, the main powerful of Windows Server Core becomes available when using such an approach, but sometimes it’s not so user friendly. This is why I’ve been asking so many times if exist anything more graphic :). Yes, one of the first recommendations to work and manage Windows 2008 Server Core is to use MMC from a remote machine, but MMC cannot do everything. Of course to allow work with remote tools this tool should be allowed passage through the firewall packages Server Core. In addition, this is for many more difficult than editing the registry. Therefore, We would like to have a simple graphical tool for configuring local system. The task of developing such an interface is complicated by that the Server Core has a limited set of graphics API, this is a reason why so beautiful MMC doesn’t work on it.

How to Reduce Windows Vista's Size from 15GB to 1.4GB

We all know that Windows Vista consumes a lot of resources. It reduces your PC's performances in terms of storage, memory and processor. Microsoft recommends 15GB of hard-disk space to install the OS. For some people that could be too much. A Croatian student, Dino Nuhagic wondered "Who can justify a 15GB operating system?" And he did something about it. Nuhagic developed a software called vLite that can strip Vista of useless components.

vLite is a free software and allows users to choose Vista components, hot fixes, drivers, and even language packs are installed. Then it builds a disk image that can be burned to a DVD. The software can reduce Vista to 1.4GB, the effect being the performance.

However, if you thought of using this software, you should know it is destined for average users at least. Besides, Microsoft does not recommend using any tool to strip out applications from Windows Vista, because you can damage it. Use it or not, it's your call!

The "Ext2 Installable File System for Windows" software is freeware.

If you currently have Windows running and you realize that you need some files for your work which you have stored on an Ext2 volume of your Linux installation, you no longer have to shut down Windows and boot Linux!

Furthermore, Windows will now be able to handle floppy disks which have been formatted with an Ext2 file system.

I use keyboard shortcuts to save time and avoid using the awkward mouse on system. Here are my favorites in Outlook 2007:

I also use custom keyboard shortcut keys to apply Color Categories to messages because my organizational system requires every message to be categorized based on the action I need to take.

Microsoft Corp has launched a new online service in 20 countries which will allow users to watch video clips at the same time as a network of friends and chat via Windows Live Messenger.

The new service called Messenger TV will offer a range of clips on MSN Video including MTV shows and music clips from providers such as Sony BMG.

1. Get Windows Live Messenger if you don't already have it.
2. Start chatting to a friend and select Messenger TV from the list of activities, or just click here to start it, which will prompt you to select a friend to share Messenger TV with. (See the images below for the list of activities and the icon to get to them when you are in a text chat.)
3. If you don't have any friends online, add MessengerTV@Live.com as a friend and start a text chat. It will invite you to start Messenger TV.

Windows Live Messenger blocks www.youtube.com (Update) Everything back to normal

Not too long ago, users on the Neowin.net forums started complaining about not being able to send YouTube links to their contacts on Windows Live Messenger.

As you can see, any messages that contain in text or links to “www.youtube.com” fails to be delivered.

Curious as a cat, If loaded up a network packet sniffer to find out exactly what’s going on behind the scenes. Technically, the message packets are in fact sent to the Messenger servers (so it’s not being blocked at your client), but the server sends back a negative acknowledgment (NAK) packet instead of an acknowledgment (ACK) packet. Simply speaking, the server is refusing the message.

As some people may recall, in 2006 there was a report quoting MSN Sweden admitting Microsoft is “censoring” messages it deems a security threat. How it does this is by matching messages with a known list of text strings which are commonly found in phishing and malware sites such as “download.php”. Microsoft doesn’t publishes which strings are on this list for obvious reasons, but a comprehensive list of known blocked strings can be found here.

We all love a good conspiracy, but I don’t think anyone at Microsoft was dumb enough to do this deliberately to undermine Google. On the other hand, even if it was an accident, how do you ever trust this system?

Update (15/5/08): Not surprisingly YouTube links are working again.

Update 2: The Windows Live Messenger blog published a post admitting the problem which they claim was entirely controlled by a third party and their process of blocking harmful URLs. Another good reason to outsource.

How to run Windows XP from a USB stick

Recent days, there are so many Linux comes with live CDs. This is an alternative way for those who doesn’t want to install Linux on their hard drive. The live CD also become a problem solver when the system wont boot up or something happened with the system & you may rescue the files with CD. Beside the CDs, one of merely known Linux named DSL are comes with damn live USB! Note that this method required a computer which have ability to boot from USB devices.

By the chance, I heard something about Windows XP live in a USB flash disk. This is much interesting for me & would like to tried it. In a seconds, there was a secure link referred to the download page from Google. It size’s about 54MB & the link are here.

After it had completely downloaded, the packages are being extracted with WinRAR ~ since it is compressed with RAR format somehow. Finally, there are 7 files extracted from it. The first 2 files are the manual in Germany & Russian language. You might not found the English documentation because bartPE are seems developed by a Germany. First of all, we need to provide a USB stick with minimal size of 256MB. Then, make a fresh quick format with hpusbfw.exe tool includes in the packages. See the picture below.

After the format process done, reboot the system & make sure to activate the USB boot sequence from BIOS ~ while the USB disk are still plugged in. Let the computer booted from it & it will displayed a boot process in the monitor. The boot processes are taking much times depend upon the USB storage speed, so it would be great if you also preparing a coffee & a cigarette during waiting the desktop showing up.

The default desktop background is covered by dark bartPE pictures. In the left corner are showing up a “Go” button ~ representing a Start button in a real Windows. Have a click on it, it will raise a list of simple menu pointing to the default applications such as Windows Wordpad, the Calculator program, Paint image editor & a file manager called A43 replacing the Windows Explorer instead.

Note that this USB live also equipped with the fully functionality of command prompt. From the picture below, it’s DOS are actually come from a real Windows XP.

To view the detailed system information, take a tour to About menu. It will displayed a core simple information likes the system environment & other embedded programs.

Look at the picture below again, an About link from Paint programs shows you the exactly same as the About you might found in a real Windows. However, it is a Germany entirely. Doesn’t have to confused with it.

Although it has great advantages, eg: to rescue the system, it’s legality to use is being asked. This one link from several address pages are showing about the proprietary law legality. For me, it might be fine as long as the needed are still in a right condition. Have a nice mobility with it.

BSNL - 500 Mbps...???? Start dreaming...!!

Smart homes may become a reality soon
Remember all those stories about remote-controlled gadgets at home. These have remained dreams for Indians. Not any more. Bharat Sanchar Nigam Ltd (BSNL) is all set to install and test a killer application that will offer broadband speeds of at least 500 mbps (250 time the current speed) to homes through fibre optics network in Kolkata. Such speeds will be the basic enabler for these dream technologies.

Currently, BSNL offers a broadband speed of 2 mbps that can be stretched to 16 mbps allowing limited internet-based value added services like gaming and steaming video. Mbps is the speed at which a certain volume of data travels every second. Faster speeds help run more intelligent applications.

BSNL is currently working on two technologies. One that will offer speeds of 100 mbps and the other that will allow at least 500 mbps. The 100 mbps project will allow users to make his/her entire house a local area network on which all gadgets like TV, refrigerator, washing machine, micro-wave, gizzard, water filter or the lock at the main door and the gate will be connected. All these can be controlled remotely through a wireless gadget like the cell phone or any other handheld devices.

Then here is a very interesting Java Mobile application that is written by Che-Wei Wang and makes your phone to literally beat the time into you.

The Haptic Clock is a small clock program for Java powered mobile phones. The clock conveys time through a sequence of vibrations so you never have to pull the phone out of your pocket to tell time.

Long vibrations are the number of hours of the current time on a 12 hour clock, so 6pm and 6am are both 6 vibrations. The shorter vibrations are the number of minutes divided by 5. So 4 vibrations is 20 minutes and 7 vibrations is 35 minutes. Example: (3) long vibrations and (6) short vibrations means it’s 3:30. Just in case you do want to see the time, the screen displays the time with tick marks for hours, minutes and seconds.

Oracle ships Windows version of 11g database

Oracle has released the Windows version of its flagship 11g database, a few months after the company shipped the Linux version. Along with assorted performance improvements, the Windows release features beefed-up integration with Microsoft's platform on both the administrative and developer levels.

Administrators can now execute backup and recovery jobs with Windows Volume Shadow Copy Service, according to Oracle. The database also features tight links with Microsoft's Visual Studio integrated development environment, the company said.

Even as Oracle adds richer support for the Windows platform into 11g -- a result of a working partnership between the two companies -- it is competing vigorously with Microsoft in the database market. Microsoft is set to launch SQL Server 2008 in February.

Other new features in 11g include:

-- Oracle Real Application Testing. This enables customers to use real-life production workloads to test the effect of potential changes within IT environments, before actually conducting the change, the company says.

-- Oracle Advanced Compression, which can compress data by three times or more, according to the company.

-- Oracle Total Recall, a system for querying historical changes to data.

Windows Server 2008 and Windows Vista are introducing some of the biggest changes to our networking stack in recent memory. From the server side, I think this is one of the biggest overlooked features of Windows Server 2008.

To that point, earlier this year we released the Tolly Group Whitepaper that showed the how the improvements to our TCP/IP stack and SMB 2.0 Protocol gave us a 3.5x time-to-completion improvement over Windows Server 2003. The paper really is a good read and it has some good technical details of what the exact improvements are that allow this to happen. (receive window auto-tuning, SMB File handles and buffer sizes, etc)

One of the better reports that I have seen on the networking improvements came across my inbox this morning, and it came from our MSN group who is dogfooding Windows Server 200 RC0.

Here is what they are seeing:

First set of tests is to transfer 10.793 GB ( a collection of 10 VirtualEarth Stitch files) from TK2 Datacenter to BLU Datacenter and from BLU Dataceneter to TK2 Datacenter.

a. In windows 2003, from TK2 to BLU, it took 5 hours, 40 minutes and 13 seconds. Transfer rate observed was 567813 Bytes/sec. From BLU to TK2, it took 6 hours, 6 minutes and 26 seconds. Transfer rate observed was 527182 Bytes/sec.

b. In LH RC0 build, from TK2 to BLU, it took 7 minutes and 45 seconds, Transfer rate observed was 25062249 Bytes/sec. From BLU to TK2, it was 8 minutes and 10 seconds, Transfer rate observed was 23712912 Bytes/sec

The improvement observed was ~45 times faster over windows 2003

Inks $500 m deal with Microsoft for IPTV; readies for DTH rollout

MUMBAI: The rules of the game in India’s booming IPTV, DTH and telecom space are set to change, if Anil Ambani-led Reliance Communications (RCom) has its way.

The company plans to straddle IPTV and DTH platforms simultaneously, as it is doing with CDMA and GSM at present.

Under a strategic partnership announced by RCom and Microsoft on Monday, for providing Internet Protocol Television (IPTV) services, RCom will invest $500 million as licence fee for the software and spend an additional $500 million in setting up IPTV infrastructure in the country.

Reliance ADA Group chairman Anil Ambani said, “We will provide IPTV through our own platform and are targeting 400 channels to start with in Mumbai and Delhi.”

RCom has been carrying out IPTV trials in around 20,000 households in Mumbai and Delhi and would be ready to launch services by the fiscal-end, to start with in Mumbai and Delhi, with 400 channels.

The company will also start offering its Bluemagic direct-to-home (DTH) television service in the next few months.

Steve Ballmer, CEO, Microsoft said, “Reliance is about to change the way consumers experience TV. It is the only major digital device that has been left out of the networking revolution and Microsoft and Reliance are now making the TV a first class citizen in the connected enterprise landscape.”

Prakash Bajpai, RCom’s president-home and enterprise business said the technology gives viewers complete control on home entertainment as well as internet-enabled

After a week of feverish speculation, Apple released its new iPod last night, confirming rumours that the sixth generation of the digital music player will have a 3.5in touch-screen and integrated wi-fi connection, allowing users to connect to the internet from an iPod for the first time.

The new iPod will play video downloaded direct from the internet, as well as video games, both with widescreen view. Users will still be able to transfer music on to the player direct from iTunes, Apple's music provider.

The new iPod carries many of the features associated with Apple's iPhone, released earlier in the year, and closely resembles that product in appearance.

There had been frenzied gossip in anticipation of yesterday's media event in San Francisco's Moscone Convention Centreabout what Steve Jobs, founder and CEO of Apple, would be announcing. The event was broadcast live by video-link to the BBC's offices in West London.

Mr Jobs, 52, also announced the launch of new versions of the iPod Shuffle and the iPod Nano, both smaller versions of the iPod, as well as an upgraded version of the existing full-size model that will now come in a metallic finish. The new iPod Nano will have a 2.5in (6.3cm) screen for watching movies and playing games, and will be available in five different colours.

It had been over a year since Apple released a new generation of the iPod or iPod Nano, the longest period between new generations of the music player. September, traditionally the start of the holiday season in America, has provided Apple with sharp rises in sales in the past. Apple is notoriously guarded about its new releases, and excellent at attracting publicity for launches. It certainly succeeded at yesterday's event, billed The Beat Goes On. In the past week alone, shares in Apple rose by 13.5 per cent. The company has sold more than 100 million iPods since it launched the product five years ago. Goldman Sachs predicts the new iPod will improve on its forecast of 19.8 million sales in the next quarter, and may allow Apple to match its 21 million sales over the same period last year.

The generation game

iPod – First Generation

Released in October 2001, the first iPod revolutionised the MP3 market and stored what was then an impressive 5GB of music (around 1,000 songs). Priced at £349, it had a mechanised scroll wheel with buttons on its right, left, top and bottom.

iPod – Second Generation

Released in July 2002, it came with what is now Apple's trademark touch-sensitive scroll-wheel and was compatible with Windows for the first time. It came with 10GB or 20GB.

iPod – Third Generation

Released in April 2003, it separated the four buttons from the wheel, putting them between it and the screen. A "cradle" allowed the user to recharge the batteries and put songs onto the 40GB player.

Sony Develops "Bio Battery" Generating Electricity from Sugar - Achieves world's highest power output for passive-type bio batteries

TOKYO, August 23, 2007- Sony today announced the development of a bio battery1 that generates electricity from carbohydrates (sugar) utilizing enzymes as its catalyst, through the application of power generation principles found in living organisms.

Test cells of this bio battery have achieved power output of 50 mW, currently the world's highest level2 for passive-type3 bio batteries. The output of these test cells is sufficient to power music play back on a memory-type Walkman.

In order to realize the world's highest power output, Sony developed a system of breaking down sugar to generate electricity that involves efficiently immobilizing enzymes and the mediator (electronic conduction materials) while retaining the activity of the enzymes at the anode. Sony also developed a new cathode structure which efficiently supplies oxygen to the electrode while ensuring that the appropriate water content is maintained. Optimizing the electrolyte for these two technologies has enabled these power output levels to be reached.

Sugar is a naturally occurring energy source produced by plants through photosynthesis. It is therefore regenerative, and can be found in most areas of the earth, underlining the potential for sugar-based bio batteries as an ecologically- friendly energy device of the future.

Sony will continue its development of immobilization systems, electrode composition and other technologies in order to further enhance power output and durability, with the aim of realizing practical applications for these bio batteries in the future.

Wuntoo has written a detailed comment on how to bypass the internet content filtering software of your school or office using just the calculator application (Start->Run. type calc.exe). This unique Mathematics based trick will probably work when websites are blocked in your institution or corporate network based on the host name or their IP address.

The trick is to convert the human readable website address that's blocked (like bebo.com) into an IP address ( 208.75.184.160) and again translate this value to a decimal address which is probably not blocked by the website filters.

Here's a step by step guide to render www.myspace. com to a decimal address:

How to Access Restricted Websites

1) get its IP address (216.178.39.74), by pinging the name (if you have a direct internet connection) or if you only have access via a web proxy then find it out by using a networking website like network-tools. com.

2) start your PC's calculator, and change it to scientific mode (using the "View" menu)

3) enter each of the four IP octets, one by one, converting them to binary (enter number and click on the "Bin" radio button)

Thus 216.178.39.74 becomes
216 = 11011000
178 = 10110010
39 = 00100111
74 = 01001010
Notice how any binary numbers less than 8 digits long have had leading zeroes added to pad them out. Reassembled into IP address order, you get 11011000.10110010. 00100111. 01001010

Wuntoo adds: I used to be in a place that had websense, where both website names and their corresponding IP addresses were blocked. However was able to get limited access by converting the IP address to decimal, which websense (at the time) did not know about. This might have changed since, or if your school runs an old version it might still work. Note that if you surf away from the page you might hit websense blocks again unless you manually reconstruct the next address you want to get to.

Considering all the ATM hacking that's been going on of late, it's not all that surprising to see those "uber-secure" fingerprint readers hitting mini-banks in Japan and Columbia, and now a pilot program is getting set to install 15 biometric ATMs at "village kiosks in five districts across southern India." The fingerprint-reading machines are expected to serve around 100,000 workers, primarily farmers and other laborers, who will finally be able to withdraw funds directly from a machine rather than suffering through the corrupt hand-me-down process that often steals money away from already poor workers. AGS Infotech, who is supplying the first batch of systems for the trial, is interested in seeing if the system actually works out, as many villagers have trouble interacting with any type of computing interface, and because many villages have their own dialects, making a UI that can communicate to everyone is difficult. Of course, there are individuals who suggest that these systems will only incite crime, as thieves look to new methods (read: hacking a thumb or two) to extract funds, but proponents of the system say that this is no different than armed criminals forcing someone to give up their PIN number at gunpoint. Nevertheless, the trial is slated to start soon, and there's quite a few outsiders watching intently to gauge its eventual success or failure, as analysts predict that "over 100,000 ATMs" could be necessary to handle India's booming economy in the next few years

The Microsoft Office Word 2003 Redaction Add-in makes it easy for you to mark sections of a document for redaction. You can then redact the document so that the sections you specified are blacked out. You can either print the redacted document or use it electronically.

It downloadable from Microsoft website. I tried it and it works like professional programs doing the same thing.

First Look: G-Tech G-Raid 800GB External HDD

The ever-expanding storage on hard drives has taken a new meaning for performance seekers and video professionals, thanks to G-Tech’s G-Raid 800GB External HDD. The company’s latest hard drive features two drives in a Raid 0 configuration for performance with a Firewire 800 (and Firewire 400 for backwards compatibility) connectivity option. According to G-Tech, the drive is designed for video professionals with a need to store gigabytes of video files. The company says its G-Raid drive supports multi-stream video playback with real-time effects on Final Cut Pro HD, Premiere Pro and other video editing software. Internally, the storage unit carries Hitachi 7,200 RPM drive with 8MB of onboard cache for optimal performance, or so says G-Tech.

Externally, the unit closely resembles the G5 design from Apple with a compact aluminum enclosure and a grayish color scheme. Furthermore, G-Tech has integrated a cooling fan in the casing to extend the life span of the disks. The Firewire ports and a power switch are situated at the back of the drive for a cleaner look on the front.

Some screenshots of the new Hotmail interface. It is supposed to have outlook like UI, drag and drop support, auto refresh like Gmail, keyboard shortcuts and 2 GB of storage space.

Looks good but it could be a bit late. I use Gmail now for most of my email and almost never check hotmail. Previously Hotmail was my primary email.
